Title: In Praise of Parens Patriae
Author: Blokhuis, Jason C.
Abstract: The article argues that in some regards, children's autonomy can only be developed and protected by means of paternalistic authority exercised by state-run schools as a necessary balance or counter to the authority of the families of children. It specifically argues that when children are concurrently subject to parens patriae educational authority, their independent welfare interests are better protected. According to the author, every child, in order to fluorish as an adult, should ultimately be able to identify with the life he or she is leading, to recognize it as good, and to see it as the product of his or her own choices.
